In Maryland, the homestead exemption applies to real property, including your home, condominium, or co-op. You must own and occupy the property in order to protect it. You can claim a property tax credit if all the following apply: Your homestead is in Michigan (whether you rent or own). You were a Michigan Resident for at least 6 months of the year you are filing in. You have Total Household Resources (THR) under a specified amount adjusted annually.

The credit is based on the 10% limit for purposes of the State property tax, and 10% or less for purposes of local taxation. In other words, the homeowner pays no property tax on the assessment increase which is above the limit.

You must live in the home to qualify for the tax break. Some states exempt a certain percentage of a home's value from property taxes, while other states exempt a set dollar amount. If your state uses a percentage method, the exemption will be more valuable to homeowners with more valuable homes.

A further condition is that the dwelling must be the owner's principal residence and the owner must have lived in it for at least six months of the year, including July 1 of the year for which the credit is applicable, unless the owner was temporarily unable to do so by reason of illness or need of special care.
