To qualify for a homestead, you must: Own a property, Occupy the property as your sole or primary residence, Be a Minnesota resident. The Minnesota Homestead Credit Refund can provide relief to homeowners paying property taxes.Homestead status can save you money on your property taxes. Individual taxpayer identification numbers now qualify property owners for homestead exclusion. You must notify the County Assessor that your primary residence has changed, and you will need to complete and sign a new homestead application. Homestead is a property tax reduction program, intended to keep taxes lower on owner-occupied homes, according to Minnesota Statute 273.124.
