To qualify for a homestead, you must: Own a property, Occupy the property as your sole or primary residence, Be a Minnesota resident. Homestead status can save you money on your property taxes.Individual taxpayer identification numbers now qualify property owners for homestead exclusion. The 1b classification provides a reduced tax rate for homestead property of any person who qualifies as blind or as permanently and totally disabled. You are required to provide your social security number as part of the homestead application process. The homestead application cannot be submitted electronically, it must be mailed. The application can be filled out from your computer and printed for mailing. You must own and occupy the property as your primary residence no later than Dec. 31. You must be a Minnesota resident.
