The California Constitution provides a $7,000 reduction in the taxable value for a qualifying owner-occupied home. The home must have been the principal place of residence of the owner on the lien date, January 1st.

All applicants must file an application in-office or online for homestead exemption. A person who, on January 1, has legal title or beneficial title in equity to real property in the State of Florida and who in good faith makes the property his or her permanent residence is eligible.

The Homeowners' Exemption, which allows a $7,000 exemption from property taxation, is authorized by Article XIII, section 3, subdivision (k) of the California Constitution and implemented by Revenue and Taxation Code section 218. The exemption reduces a dwelling's assessed value on a qualified residence.

Prop. 19 would eliminate a loophole that has allowed the children and grandchildren of original property owners to avoid paying market-value taxes on a property that is not their primary residence.

This exemption is available to a single homeowner age 65 or older, or a couple filing a joint petition, if either or both are age 65 or over.

You must occupy the dwelling as your principal residence as of January 1 of each year to qualify for the Homeowners' Exemption for that year.

New applications for Homestead Exemptions may be filed online or in person, at the Property Appraiser's office between January 1 and March 1, with one exception. Florida law allows new Homestead applications only to be filed prior to January 1 of the year the exemption is to be effective.
