Veterans may be entitled to property tax exemption for their primary residence. Eligibility and the exemption amount typically depend on disability rating, state, county and city. For example, some states limit exemptions to Veterans with a 100% VA disability rating, while others go as low as 10%.

To request an application for exemption, please call our office at 919-856-5400. The completed application must be filed with the Department of Tax Administration during the regular listing period, which is from January 1 through January 31 each year.

The Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exclusion is for veterans who have been found permanently and totally disabled by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The exclusion applies to a residence owned and occupied by a qualified veteran. The first $45,000 of appraised value of the residence is excluded from taxation.

A South Carolina military veteran who is totally and permanently disabled may immediately claim a Property Tax exemption on real estate the veteran owns beginning with the year in which the disability occurs. The exemption is retroactive to 2022 and is based on the date that the veteran acquires the property.

Property Tax Exemption North Carolina does not levy property tax on real and personal property that is used exclusively for air cleaning, waste disposal or to abate, reduce or prevent air and/or water pollution.

North Carolina excludes from property taxes a portion of the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by North Carolina residents aged 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled whose 2024 income does not exceed $37,900 annually.

Homeowners who are 65 and older or 100% disabled can get $25,000 or up to 50% off their home value, whichever is greater, if they meet certain income and ownership requirements. Married couples can qualify even if only one partner is 65+ or disabled.

North Carolina defers a portion of the property taxes on the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by a North Carolina resident who has owned and occupied the property at least five years, is at least 65 years of age or is totally and permanently disabled, and whose income does not exceed $55,050.
