To apply, you must file Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, at least 60 days before your trip. The I-131 application allows you to travel outside of the United States while maintaining your permanent residency status. If you are a permanent or conditional permanent resident who has been outside the US for one year or longer, apply for a re-entry permit before you travel. Permanent residents (green card holders), must have a re-entry permit when they plan to travel outside of the United States for up to two years. Use of MPC does not require pre-approval. You can get permission to travel through either Advance Parole or TPS travel authorization.
