Persons crossing the border must carry proof of identity and citizenship. In most cases this is a passport. Examples of additional documentation can include a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, citizenship certificate, or a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license).

Information for Canadians However, all Canadians entering the U.S. by air require passports, and Canadians entering the U.S. by land or sea must have a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant travel document. Some Canadians, do require visas.

Apply for a travel document or certificate of identity: Adults (30 business days or less)

Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.

Canadian permanent residents may need a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States. You must obtain this visa from the U.S. authorities before entering the country. You must also have a valid passport from your country of citizenship.

If you are a permanent or conditional permanent resident who has been outside the U.S. for one year or longer, apply for a re-entry permit before you travel. Use Form I-131 - Application for Travel Document. For permanent residents, the re-entry permit is valid for two years from the date of issue.

Permanent residents (landed immigrants) of Canada must have a nonimmigrant visa.
