The Alaska Second Injury Fund (IF) is a state-run program that provides employers with reimbursements for the costs of work-related injuries or illnesses that are the result of an employee’s pre-existing disability. The purpose of the IF is to encourage employers to hire and retain employees with disabilities by providing them with reimbursement for the additional costs associated with managing the pre-existing condition. The Alaska Second Injury Fund consists of two main components: Petition to Join Second Injury Fund and Claim for Reimbursement. Petition to Join Second Injury Fund: Companies may petition the IF to become an approved employer in the program. Once approved, employers can receive reimbursement for the costs associated with managing the pre-existing disability of their workers. Claim for Reimbursement: Once an employer has been approved, they can submit a claim to the IF for reimbursement of an employee’s work-related injury or illness that is a result of a pre-existing disability. The claim must include the employee’s medical records, documentation of the work-related injury or illness, and proof of the pre-existing disability. Once the claim is approved, the employer will receive reimbursement from the IF. There are two types of claims that can be filed with the IF: Initial Claim and Reopened Claim. Initial Claim: This is the first claim that an employer files with the IF. The employer must provide all necessary documentation to prove the pre-existing disability and the work-related injury or illness. Reopened Claim: An employer can reopen an existing claim if they need to update or supplement the existing documentation that was submitted with the initial claim. The employer must provide proof that the additional documentation is necessary to prove the pre-existing disability and the work-related injury or illness.
