The Alaska Child in Need of Aid Mediation Program provides mediation services to parties involved in Child in Need of Aid (CHINA) proceedings in Alaska. CHINA proceedings involve the involvement of the state in the protection of children who are at risk of abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The program is designed to facilitate a safe and respectful dialogue between parties involved in the CHINA proceedings, such as parents, children, foster parents, and state agencies. The goal of the mediation program is to help parties reach an agreement that meets the needs of the child and the family and that is agreeable to all involved. The Alaska Child in Need of Aid Mediation Program offers three types of mediation services: 1. Prepetition mediation — This type of mediation is offered to families before a petition is filed with the court. It focuses on helping parties reach an agreement that eliminates the need for a petition to be filed. 2. Post-petition mediation — This type of mediation is offered after a petition has been filed with the court. It focuses on helping parties reach an agreement that resolves the issues raised in the petition. 3. Permanency planning mediation — This type of mediation is offered when parties are considering long-term plans for the care and placement of a child. It focuses on helping parties reach an agreement that is in the best interests of the child and that meets the needs of all involved.
