An Alaska Release Order (ARE) is a court order issued by the Supreme Court of Alaska, allowing for the release of an incarcerated individual prior to their sentence being served. The purpose of and ARE is to reduce the population of Alaska’s correctional facilities to help protect inmates and staff from the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. There are three types of ARE: Pre-Sentence ARE, Post-Sentence ARE, and Temporary ARE. Pre-Sentence Arms are issued prior to sentencing, allowing for inmates to be released prior to their sentencing date. Post-Sentence Arms are issued after a sentence has been handed down, allowing inmates to be released early. Temporary Arms are issued in order to allow inmates to be released for a specified period of time, usually for medical treatment or other emergency purposes.
