The Alabama Impairment Rating Guide (AIR) is a form used by medical providers to assess the percentage of disability caused by a work-related injury or illness. It is based on the American Medical Association’s Guide to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides) and is used to determine the amount of compensation a worker should receive for a work-related disability. The AIR is broken down into two main types: the Whole Person Impairment Rating (WEI) and the Body Part Impairment Rating (BPI). The WEI is calculated based on the medical provider’s assessment of the worker’s overall ability to function in work and daily activities, while the BPI is based on the medical provider’s assessment of the worker’s ability to use an affected body part. Both ratings are based on the AMA Guides and are used in conjunction with other medical evidence to determine the worker’s level of impairment.
