California Order on Placement in Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (COP-STRTP) is a court order issued by a juvenile court judge when a minor is deemed to be a danger to him/herself or to others and requires a short-term stay in a residential facility providing therapeutic services. This order is used in cases where the minor is in need of mental health services and/or substance abuse treatment, and the court has determined that the minor’s needs cannot be met in a less restrictive setting. There are two types of COP-STRTP orders: Emergency Order on Placement in Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (EOP-STRTP) and Standard Order on Placement in Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (SOP-STRTP). An EOP-STRTP is issued when the court finds that a minor is a danger to him/herself or to others and requires immediate placement in a residential facility. A SOP-STRTP is issued when the court finds that a minor requires the services of a residential facility and does not pose an immediate danger to him/herself or to others. Both orders require that the minor be placed in a residential facility for a period of up to 90 days.
