A California Firearms Emergency Protective Order (FPO) is a court order issued by a judge that temporarily restricts a person’s access to firearms and ammunition. The order is designed to protect the safety of an individual or the public by prohibiting the possession, purchase, or receipt of firearms or ammunition. There are two types of California EPOS: Gun Violence Restraining Orders (Gyros) and Domestic Violence Protective Orders (DVP Os). Gyros are issued when a family member, law enforcement officer, or mental health professional files a petition with the court, asking for an individual to be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to a threat of violence. DVP Os are issued when a family member files a petition with the court, asking for an individual to be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to an act of domestic violence. Both Gyros and DVP Os are valid for up to one year and can be extended by the court if necessary.
