The Hawaii Petition for Desertification is a document used by union members in the state of Hawaii to file a petition for desertification of their union. It is used to request a secret-ballot election in which union members can vote to decide whether the union should be certified. The petition must be signed by at least 30% of the members of the union. There are two types of Hawaii Petition for Desertification: a Voluntary Recognition Desertification Petition and a Representation Election Desertification Petition. A Voluntary Recognition Desertification Petition is used when the union has been voluntarily recognized by the employer and the union members decide to certify. A Representation Election Desertification Petition is used when the union is trying to gain recognition from the employer and the union members decide to certify. Both petitions must be filed with the Hawaii Labor Relations Board.
