Iowa Application for Native Prairie or Wetlands Property Tax Exemption is a program run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that allows landowners to apply for property tax exemption on land with native prairie or wetland areas. The program is designed to encourage conservation and restoration of native prairie and wetland habitats in Iowa. There are four types of Iowa Applications for Native Prairie or Wetland Property Tax Exemption: Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D. Class A is for land that is predominantly covered by native prairie or wetland vegetation, with a minimum of 70 percent of the land covered in native vegetation. Class B is for land that has at least 50 percent of the land covered in native vegetation, with restoration and management activities in place to improve and maintain the native vegetation. Class C is for land that has at least 30 percent of the land covered in native vegetation, with restoration and management activities in place to improve and maintain the native vegetation. Class D is for land that has at least 10 percent of the land covered in native vegetation, with restoration and management activities in place to improve and maintain the native vegetation. All applications must be accompanied by a written land management plan and documentation of the land's current condition. Applicants must also provide proof of ownership of the land, and may be required to submit additional documents to verify the land's eligibility.
