An Illinois Citation Notice is a written notice issued by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, which is the department responsible for maintaining driving records. The notice is sent to drivers who have failed to respond to a traffic citation or other court order within the prescribed timeframe. Depending on the type of citation or court order, an Illinois Citation Notice may require the driver to pay a fine, complete a court-ordered action, or appear in court. There are three types of Illinois Citation Notices: Civil Law Violation Notice, Uniform Citation Notice, and Court Appearance Notice. The Civil Law Violation Notice is issued for minor traffic violations and requires the payment of a fine within the prescribed timeframe; the Uniform Citation Notice is issued for more serious violations and requires either payment of a fine or completion of a court-ordered action within the prescribed timeframe; and the Court Appearance Notice is issued when the driver must appear in court.
