An Illinois Civil No Contact Order (Emergency & Plenary) is a court order issued in Illinois to protect a person from violence or threats of violence. It provides protection from physical, sexual, and psychological harm. It prohibits the respondent (the person against whom the order is issued) from any contact with the petitioner (the person filing the order). The order can also include a provision prohibiting the respondent from coming within a certain distance of the petitioner's home, school, work, or any other place the petitioner frequents. There are two types of Illinois Civil No Contact Order: Emergency and Plenary. An Emergency No Contact Order can be issued without notice to the respondent. It is not a permanent order and is only in effect until a hearing is held. A Plenary No Contact Order may be issued as an extension of an Emergency No Contact Order, or it may be issued after a hearing. It is a more permanent order and can last up to two years. It can also be extended at the end of its term.
