Illinois Reimbursement of Services by Defendants for Court-Appointed Attorneys in Criminal Cases is a program offered by the Illinois Supreme Court to help defendants who are unable to afford an attorney. The program provides reimbursement of fees for court-appointed attorneys to defendants who have been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor, or juvenile offense. The program is designed to help those with limited financial means access high quality legal representation. Under the program, defendants must apply for reimbursement of attorney’s fees and costs by completing an application form and submitting it to the court. The court will review the application and determine whether the defendant is eligible for reimbursement. If approved, the court will order the defendant to pay the attorney’s fees and costs from his or her own funds or through a payment plan. There are two types of Illinois Reimbursement of Services by Defendants for Court-Appointed Attorneys in Criminal Cases: the Fee Waiver Reimbursement Program and the Payment Plan Reimbursement Program. The Fee Waiver Reimbursement Program allows defendants to have their attorney’s fees waived or reduced if they can demonstrate financial hardship. The Payment Plan Reimbursement Program allows defendants to make payments towards their attorney’s fees over a period of time. In both programs, the court will review the defendant’s application and determine the amount of reimbursement. The court may approve a full or partial reimbursement of attorney’s fees and costs.
