Illinois Third Party Citation is a process that allows a third party to serve court documents on a party involved in a legal case. The third party is known as a “server” and can be either a professional service or an individual appointed by the court. This process is used when a party cannot be found in order to serve them with legal documents. The server will notify the party of the court documents by providing a copy of the documents and a document called a Third Party Citation, which includes the court case information. There are two types of Illinois Third Party Citation: Service by Publication and Service by Posting. Service by Publication requires the server to place an advertisement in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the court case is located. Service by Posting requires the server to post a notice on the door of the defendant’s residence or place of business.
