Illinois Notice by Publication is a legal process by which an individual or organization can notify specific persons of any pending court actions without providing direct contact. This type of notice is usually issued when the person or organization to be notified is unknown or cannot be found after a reasonable effort has been made to locate them. There are two types of Illinois Notice by Publication: (1) Notice to Heirs, Legatees and Devises, which is used to notify persons entitled to an estate, and (2) Notice to Unknown Owners, which is used to notify persons with an interest in real property. The notice must be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the action is pending. The notice must include: (1) the name of the court; (2) the case number; (3) the title of the action; (4) a statement of the relief sought; (5) the address of the court; and (6) the name and address of the party initiating the action.
