Illinois Instructions are instructions given by the Illinois Supreme Court to the Appellate Court concerning how to apply the law to a particular case. There are three types of Illinois Instructions: Pattern Instructions, IPI (Illinois Pattern Instructions) and Non-IPI (Non-Illinois Pattern Instructions). Pattern Instructions are instructions that are written by the Illinois Supreme Court and given to the Appellate Court that provide guidance on how to apply the law to a particular case. IPI (Illinois Pattern Instructions) are instructions that are based on the pattern instructions but modified to fit a particular case. Non-IPI (Non-Illinois Pattern Instructions) are instructions that are written by the Appellate Court and not based on the pattern instructions. All of these instructions are used to help the Appellate Court decides a case by providing a framework to apply the law.
