Illinois How to Request an Interpreter is a service provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDs) to provide language assistance to individuals who may not be able to effectively communicate in English. The IDs provide interpreters and translation services for a variety of different languages, including American Sign Language (ASL), Spanish, Polish, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian. To request an interpreter, individuals can call the IDs Language Access Hotline at 888-806-2230 or email languageaccess@dhs.state.il.us. The IDs will review the request and determine the best way to provide language assistance. Depending on the situation, one of the following types of interpreter services may be provided: • On-site Interpreter: An on-site interpreter will come to the individual’s location and provide face-to-face interpretation. • Telephone Interpreter: A telephone interpreter will provide interpretation services over the phone. • Video Remote Interpreting (VRI): VRI is a live, two-way video communication between an individual and an interpreter. • Written Translation: Written translation services are available for documents that need to be translated from English to another language. The IDs will provide the requested interpreter services at no cost to the individual. If an individual needs language assistance, they can call the IDs Language Access Hotline or email languageaccess@dhs.state.il.us to request an interpreter.
