The Illinois Order of Protection is a legal document issued by a court to protect individuals from physical and emotional abuse, harassment, or intimidation. It is a civil order issued in the state of Illinois to provide protection from violence, threats of violence, or stalking. There are two types of Illinois Order of Protection: Emergency Order of Protection and Plenary Order of Protection. An Emergency Order of Protection is issued without notice to the abuser and is only valid for 14 days. This type of Order of Protection is meant to provide protection until a Plenary Order of Protection (which is issued after a court hearing) can be obtained. The Emergency Order of Protection can include orders staying away from the protected person, their family, their home, their place of work, or their school. A Plenary Order of Protection is issued after a court hearing and is valid for up to two years. The Plenary Order of Protection can include orders staying away from the protected person, their family, their home, their place of work, or their school. It can also include the granting of exclusive possession of the home, the awarding of financial support, and the prohibiting of any contact between the abuser and the protected person.
