Illinois Admission of Paternity is a process through which a man can legally establish himself as the father of a child. This process is typically used when a man and a woman are not married at the time of the child's birth. Upon completion of the Admission of Paternity paperwork, the man is recognized as the legal father and his name is added to the child's birth certificate. There are two types of Illinois Admission of Paternity: Voluntary Admission of Paternity and Involuntary Admission of Paternity. Voluntary Admission of Paternity occurs when both the mother and the alleged father voluntarily sign a form at a hospital, county health department, or the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. Involuntary Admission of Paternity is when the alleged father does not voluntarily sign the form, and the Department of Healthcare and Family Services initiates a paternity suit against the alleged father. Once the court determines paternity, the father's name is added to the birth certificate.
