The Indiana Out of State Travel Permit (PDF) is a document issued by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). It is required for individuals who wish to travel out of state for more than 30 days and who are not registered in Indiana. It allows the holder to drive in certain states with a valid Indiana driver's license and to purchase a new vehicle in another state. The permit also allows the holder to purchase a vehicle from a dealership in Indiana and to take it out of state. There are two types of Indiana Out of State Travel Permit (PDF): the Temporary Out of State Travel Permit and the Permanent Out of State Travel Permit. The Temporary Out of State Travel Permit is valid for up to 30 days and the Permanent Out of State Travel Permit is valid for up to 180 days. Both permits require the submission of an application, payment of a fee, and proof of valid Indiana residency.
