The Kentucky Certification of Qualified Health Professional Involuntary Treatment (Alcohol-Drug Abuse) is a process by which a qualified health professional can certify an individual as being in need of involuntary treatment for alcohol or drug abuse. The certification is made to the Circuit Court in the county of the individual’s residence. It states that the individual is suffering from a mental illness or alcohol-drug abuse and poses a risk of harm to self or others if not involuntarily committed for treatment. The certification must be signed by two qualified health professionals, one of whom must be a physician or a psychologist. There are two types of Kentucky Certification of Qualified Health Professional Involuntary Treatment (Alcohol-Drug Abuse): Type I and Type II. Type I certification is for individuals who are not already in a mental health or alcohol-drug abuse treatment program and requires a court order to be placed in such a program. Type II certification is for individuals who are already receiving mental health or alcohol-drug abuse treatment and requires a court order to continue or modify their treatment.
