Louisiana Letters Testamentary are documents issued by a Louisiana court that grant the authority to administer a decedent's estate. The Letters Testamentary are granted to the Executor (also known as the Personal Representative) named in the decedent's Last Will and Testament. These documents serve as official proof of the Executor's authority to act on behalf of the estate. There are two types of Louisiana Letters Testamentary: General Letters Testamentary and Special Letters Testamentary. General Letters Testamentary are issued to Executors of a probate estate and grant the Executor the authority to administer the estate according to the terms of the decedent's Last Will and Testament. Special Letters Testamentary are issued to Executors of an intestate estate and grant the Executor the authority to administer the estate according to Louisiana laws of intestacy.
