The Louisiana Oath of Office is an oath taken by all elected and appointed officials in the state of Louisiana. This oath is taken by state legislators, municipal officials, and state and local government employees. It is a sworn promise to uphold the laws and constitution of the state and to faithfully perform the duties of the office. The Louisiana Oath of Office typically includes the following phrases: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Louisiana and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter, so help me God." There are two types of Louisiana Oath of Office: the “General Oath” and the “Specific Oath.” The General Oath is taken by all officials, while the Specific Oath includes additional language and is taken by certain government positions, such as the Secretary of State.
