The Maryland Certificate of Service is a document issued by the court to certify that a party in a case has been properly served with legal documents. It is also known as a “return of service”. The document is required to be filed with the court to prove that a party was properly served. There are two types of Maryland Certificate of Service: Sub-Service and Personal Service. Sub-Service is when legal documents are served by mail or other authorized methods such as posting on the door of the party's residence or office. Personal Service is when legal documents are served in person by a process server or a sheriff’s office. For both types of service, the Maryland Certificate of Service must be completed and signed by the process server or sheriff's office and must include the date and time of service, the manner of service, the address or description of the place where the documents were served, and the name of the person served. For Personal Service, the process server or sheriff's office must also include the name of the person who served the documents. Once the Certificate of Service is signed, it must be filed with the court.
