The Maryland Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) Certificate is an important credential that allows social workers to practice independently and provide clinical services in the state of Maryland. The license is awarded by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners and requires social workers to meet certain standards for professional competency. To obtain the LCSW-C certification, social workers must hold a master's degree in social work from an accredited institution, have completed at least two years of post-master's supervised clinical experience, and pass the ASB clinical exam. There are three types of Maryland Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) Certificates available: Full LCSW-C Certificate, Temporary LCSW-C Certificate, and Provisional LCSW-C Certificate. A Full LCSW-C Certificate allows the holder to practice independently as a clinical social worker in Maryland and requires the holder to complete continuing education requirements. A Temporary LCSW-C Certificate is valid for a specified period of time and is available to those who have completed all the requirements for the LCSW-C Certificate but have not yet passed the ASB clinical exam. A Provisional LCSW-C Certificate is available to those who have passed the ASB clinical exam, but have yet to complete the two years of post-master's supervised clinical experience. All three types of LCSW-C Certificates are subject to renewal requirements and must be kept current in order to continue practicing in Maryland.
