Maryland Petition for Administration of Regular Estate (also known as a “petition for probate”) is a legal document used to open an estate in the state of Maryland. This document is typically filed by the executor of the estate, or someone appointed by the court to administer the estate, in order to secure legal authority to handle the decedent's assets. The petition includes information about the decedent, their assets, and their creditors, and must be approved by the court before the executor can begin the process of managing the estate. There are three types of Maryland Petition for Administration of Regular Estate: Small Estates, Estates with a Will, and Estates without a Will. A Small Estate Petition is used when the decedent’s assets are valued at less than $50,000. An Estate with a Will Petition is used when the decedent left a will stating their wishes. An Estate without a Will Petition is used when the decedent did not leave a will.
