A Maine Notice of Intent to Appeal (NOI) is a document filed with the Maine Supreme Judicial Court (MSC) to start the appeals process. The NOI notifies the court and the other parties involved in the case of the appellant's intention to challenge a lower court ruling. It also serves to formally initiate the appeals process. There are five types of Maine Notice of Intent to Appeal: an appeal from a judgment entered by a court, an appeal from an administrative decision, an appeal of a decision by a judge, an appeal from a ruling of a master, and an appeal from an interlocutory order. Each type of NOI must include certain information, such as the name and address of the appellant, the court from which the appeal is taken, the date of the order or judgment being appealed, and a description of the relief sought. The NOI must be served on all parties in the case. Upon filing, the MSC will issue a docket number for the case.
