Michigan Reservation of Name is a legal process by which a business entity reserves an available name for future use in the state of Michigan. The process is available to corporations, limited liability companies (LCS), and limited partnerships (LPs). This process allows a business entity to “reserve” a name for a period of time, preventing another entity from using the same name. The reserved name may be used when filing for formation of the business. There are two types of Michigan Reservation of Name: “direct” and “indirect”. A direct reservation is made through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), while an indirect reservation is made through an authorized filing agent. A direct reservation is valid for 180 days and is renewable for an additional 180 days. An indirect reservation is only valid for 90 days and is not renewable. Both direct and indirect reservations must be renewed prior to their expiration date in order to remain valid.
