Michigan Atlas Township is a type of civil township in Michigan. It is a form of local government, with a population of 1,500 or more. It is governed by an elected board of trustees, and it is responsible for providing essential services to its citizens, such as road maintenance, garbage collection, fire protection, and zoning. The township is divided into sections, or “townships,” based on geographic boundaries. There are three types of Michigan Atlas Township: Charter Townships, General Law Townships, and Supervisors Townships. Charter Townships have more local autonomy than the other two types, as they are able to adopt and enforce local ordinances. General Law Townships are subject to state laws, while Supervisors Townships are managed by a board of supervisors. All three types of Michigan Atlas Township are governed by the Michigan Township Act.
