Michigan Request to Discharge State-Owed Debt is a process whereby a resident of Michigan can apply to have a portion of their state-owed debt discharged. The Michigan Department of Treasury will review the application and determine whether the individual qualifies for debt relief. There are two types of Michigan Request to Discharge State-Owed Debt: 1) Tax Debt Discharge and 2) Student Loan Debt Discharge. Tax Debt Discharge is available to taxpayers who have unpaid taxes and meet the eligibility criteria. To qualify, an individual must have a financial hardship as defined by Michigan law, and the unpaid taxes must be at least 90 days delinquent. The individual must also demonstrate that they are unable to pay the outstanding tax debt in full. Student Loan Debt Discharge is available to borrowers who have unpaid student loan debt and meet the eligibility criteria. To qualify, an individual must have a financial hardship as defined by Michigan law, and the unpaid student loan debt must be at least 90 days delinquent. The individual must also demonstrate that they are unable to pay the outstanding student loan debt in full. If approved, the individual will be eligible to have a portion of their outstanding state-owed debt discharged. The amount of debt discharged will vary depending on the individual's financial situation.
