The Minnesota Alternative Transportation Liability Waiver (ALW) is a state law that offers limited liability protection to individuals and businesses for certain risks associated with the use of alternative transportation such as electric scooters, bicycles, and Segways. The ALW protects users from liability for a certain amount of damages resulting from an accident or injury caused by their use of an alternative transportation device. The ALW applies to individuals who are legally operating an alternative transportation device, as well as any businesses that own, lease, or otherwise control the device. There are three types of Minnesota Alternative Transportation Liability Waiver: the Basic ALW, the Excess ALW, and the Comprehensive ALW. The Basic ALW provides limited liability protection for up to $25,000 in damages resulting from a single accident or injury. The Excess ALW provides additional liability protection for damages up to $50,000, while the Comprehensive ALW offers the most comprehensive coverage with up to $100,000 in damages.
