New Jersey Appearance Counsel (AO 458) is a program that provides court-appointed attorneys to represent indigent criminal defendants appearing in state court in New Jersey. This program is funded by the State of New Jersey and is administered by the Office of Attorney General. The Appearance Counsel program provides representation to indigent defendants for all criminal court proceedings, including hearings, trials, and appeals. There are two types of New Jersey Appearance Counsel (AO 458): State Appointed Appearance Counsel (ISAAC) and Court-Appointed Appearance Counsel (CAAC). ISAAC attorneys are licensed to practice law in New Jersey and have been approved by the Office of Attorney General to provide representation to indigent defendants in criminal court proceedings. CAAC attorneys are attorneys who have been appointed by the court to provide representation to indigent defendants in criminal court proceedings.
