A Nevada Special Administration Petition is a legal process used to manage the affairs of a Nevada estate when the decedent did not have a will and/or did not nominate a personal representative. This process is available when a person dies without a will, known as intestate, or if the will does not name a personal representative or the named representative is unable or unwilling to serve. There are two types of Nevada Special Administration Petition: 1) General Special Administration, which is used to appoint a personal representative for an estate when no will exists or the will does not name a personal representative, and 2) Limited Special Administration, which is used to appoint a personal representative for a specific task such as the sale of real property. Both types of Nevada Special Administration Petition require court approval and supervision and involve filing a petition in the county in which the decedent resided, the appointment of a personal representative, the inventory and appraisal of the estate's assets, the notification of heirs and creditors, and the distribution of assets to heirs.
