The New York Disabled Homeowners' Exemption (THE) for 2019-2020 initial application is an exemption for disabled homeowners in New York State to help them reduce their property tax bill. This exemption is available to those who qualify as a disabled homeowner, and it can provide a reduction in the amount of taxes that these homeowners pay on their property. There are two types of THE for 2019-2020 initial application: the Basic THE and the Enhanced THE. The Basic THE provides an exemption of up to 50% of the assessed value of the home, and the Enhanced THE provides an exemption of up to 100% of the assessed value of the home. To qualify for either of these exemptions, the disabled homeowner must meet certain criteria, including being a resident of New York State, owning and occupying the property as their primary residence, and being disabled as defined by the Social Security Administration or the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. In addition, applicants must provide proof of disability, proof of residency, and proof of ownership of the property. Once approved, the exemption will be applied to the property tax bill for the current year and will remain in effect until the homeowner no longer meets the criteria for the exemption or until the property is sold.
