The New York Enhanced Driver's License — Proof of Identity ID-44EDL is a secure form of identification issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. This form of enhanced identification contains an embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, which allows it to be used for crossing the US/Canadian border, as well as proof of identity. It is tamper-proof, with enhanced security features such as a digital photograph, signature, date of birth, and other biographic information. It also includes a hologram and micro printing. The two types of New York Enhanced Driver's License — Proof of Identity ID-44EDL are the “Real ID” and “Standard” versions. The “Real ID” version complies with the federal standards of the REAL ID Act of 2005. It is accepted for federal purposes such as boarding aircraft, entering federal buildings and military bases. The “Standard” version does not comply with the federal standards of the REAL ID Act of 2005, but can be used for identification purposes such as entering a bar, obtaining a library card, and for driving purposes.
