The New York SC-1 Temporary Order of Protection (Supreme Court) is a court order issued by a judge to protect a person from violence or harassment. It is usually issued in response to an application by a petitioner, who is the person seeking protection. The Order of Protection can be issued for a variety of reasons, such as to stop physical abuse, threats, stalking, or harassment. There are two types of Temporary Orders of Protection: Expert and Final Orders. An Expert Order is issued without the respondent (the person to be protected from) present and is usually granted on an emergency basis. A Final Order is issued after a hearing where the respondent is present. The Order of Protection will be in effect for a specified period of time, usually between six months and one year. Depending on the circumstances, the court may also order the respondent to stay away from the petitioner, or to provide other forms of protection.
