A New York Clerks Certificate of Default is a document filed with the county clerk's office that is used to certify an individual's default on a debt or lien. It is a formal notice of default issued by the county clerk following an unpaid debt or lien. The certificate provides proof of an individual’s inability to pay a debt or lien and can be used in the collection process. There are two types of New York Clerks Certificates of Default: Certificate of Default and Certificate of Default with Judgment. A Certificate of Default is issued when an individual fails to appear in court or fails to answer a complaint within the required time period. A Certificate of Default with Judgment is issued when a court judgment has been entered against an individual. In addition to proof of default, the certificate also includes information on the amount of the debt, the name of the plaintiff, the name of the defendant, and the date of the judgment.
