The New York Petition for Admission to SONY Bar is an application process for attorneys seeking admission to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Applicants must submit a petition form, typically referred to as the SONY Petition for Admission, along with supporting documents and a $250 filing fee. The petition form requires the applicant to provide detailed information about their education, career, and character references. Additionally, applicants must complete a series of examinations, including the New York Law Exam (KYLE) and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MORE). There are two types of New York Petition for Admission to SONY Bar: one for attorneys already admitted to practice law in New York State and another for out-of-state attorneys. Attorneys already admitted to the New York State Bar will need to submit a petition for pro HAC vice admission, which allows them to practice law in the Southern District of New York for a limited period of time. Out-of-state attorneys must submit a petition for admission pro HAC vice, which allows them to practice law in the Southern District of New York indefinitely. In addition to the petition, attorneys must provide two letters of reference from persons who are familiar with the applicant’s character and professional qualifications. Finally, applicants must submit a complete set of fingerprints for background and security checks. Once all documents and fees are submitted, the petition is reviewed by the Committee on Character and Fitness and, if approved, the applicant will be granted admission to practice law in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
