New York Vehicle Inspection Record — Safety and Diesel Emissions is a record of inspections performed by New York State Department of Motor Vehicle-certified inspectors for vehicles registered in the state. The record includes safety and diesel emissions tests to ensure that vehicles meet all necessary safety and environmental standards. There are two main types of New York Vehicle Inspection Record — Safety and Diesel Emissions: the Annual Safety Inspection and the Diesel Smog Check. The Annual Safety Inspection includes a comprehensive review of the vehicle’s brakes, steering, suspension, tires, exhaust system, fuel system, lighting, and windshield wipers, as well as a visual inspection of the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The Diesel Smog Check includes a visual inspection of the engine and exhaust system, a functional test of the exhaust system, and a computerized emissions test. The results of both tests are recorded on the New York Vehicle Inspection Record — Safety and Diesel Emissions and must be kept for at least two years.
