New York Mediation Certification is a certification program offered by the New York State Unified Court System that enables individuals to become qualified mediators in the state of New York. The certification program is open to individuals with a professional background in law, psychology, social work, and other related fields. Upon successful completion of the program, certified mediators can practice in New York State court systems, private agencies, and other organizations. There are two levels of New York Mediation Certification: Level I and Level II. Level I is a basic mediation certification, while Level II is an advanced certification for those who have additional experience in mediation. Level I certification requires a minimum of 40 hours of training and a passing score on the New York Mediation Certification Exam. Level II certification requires an additional 30 hours of training, an additional passing score on the New York Mediation Certification Exam, and two years of experience as a certified Level I mediator. Upon certification, individuals can work as mediators to facilitate communication, guide the negotiation process, and help parties reach an agreement without the need for a court trial. Certified mediators are often called upon to handle a variety of disputes, such as family, civil, and business matters.
