The Ohio Certificate of Examination (ONE) is a credential issued by the Ohio Department of Education to individuals who have successfully completed an approved program of study in a particular area of educational practice. The ONE is a formal recognition of an individual's demonstrated mastery of a specific body of knowledge and skills. It is a prerequisite for many Ohio teachers, administrators, and other educators seeking to obtain an Ohio teaching license. There are three types of Ohio Certificates of Examination: the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Certificate, the Professional Educator License (PEL), and the Five-Year Professional Educator License (5-year PEL). The PPS Certificate is for individuals engaged in counseling, social work, school psychology, and other pupil personnel services, and includes two components: the Professional Educator License and the Pupil Personnel Services Certificate. The Professional Educator License is for individuals who are educators, including teachers, principals, and other school personnel. The 5-year PEL is for individuals who have completed an approved program of study and have five years of teaching experience. The Ohio Certificate of Examination is a valuable and respected credential that not only allows educators to legally practice in the state of Ohio, but also signals to employers that the holder has demonstrated mastery of a set of knowledge and skills related to their particular area of practice.
