Oklahoma Unauthorized Use of Vehicle is a criminal offense defined by state law. It occurs when an individual knowingly takes, operates, exercises control over, or otherwise uses a vehicle without the consent of the owner or the person legally in possession of the vehicle. It is a felony offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. There are three types of Oklahoma Unauthorized Use of Vehicle: joyriding, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, and stealing a vehicle. Joyriding is the unauthorized use of a vehicle for an unlawful purpose with the intent to temporarily deprive the owner of possession. Taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, also known as larceny of a motor vehicle, occurs when an individual takes a vehicle with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of possession. Finally, stealing a vehicle occurs when an individual takes a vehicle with the intent to permanently or temporarily deprive the owner of possession, and is accompanied by a breaking and entering or force and violence.
