Oregon Nurse Practitioner's Statement of Authorization is a document issued by the Oregon State Board of Nursing (ISBN) that authorizes nurse practitioners (NPS) to practice as independent health care providers. It is a legal document that is required in order for NPS to prescribe medications, diagnose and treat diseases, and order diagnostic testing. There are three types of Oregon Nurse Practitioner’s Statement of Authorization: Full Authorization, Limited Authorization, and Provisional Authorization. Full Authorization allows NPS to practice independently and prescribe medications. This type of authorization is issued after the NP has completed the necessary educational requirements, including an RN license and a Master’s degree. Limited Authorization is similar to Full Authorization, except that the NP is limited to prescribing medications that have been approved by the ISBN. This type of authorization is issued to NPS who have not completed the educational requirements for full authorization, but are still qualified to provide limited health care services. Provisional Authorization is a temporary authorization that is issued to NPS who have not yet completed their educational requirements. This type of authorization allows NPS to practice under the supervision of an approved preceptor. All types of Oregon Nurse Practitioner’s Statement of Authorization must be renewed every two years and are subject to the rules and regulations of the ISBN.
