Pennsylvania Private Detective License Requirements are governed by the Pennsylvania Private Detective Act of 1953. To obtain a license to practice as a private detective in Pennsylvania, an individual must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Pennsylvania, and must complete certain educational and experience requirements. In addition, applicants must pass a criminal background check, meet the licensing fees, and have a good moral character. The two types of Pennsylvania Private Detective License Requirements are the Private Investigator License and the Private Detective Agency License. The Private Investigator License requires an individual to complete a minimum of 48 hours of classroom instruction in investigative techniques and law, have at least three years of full-time investigative experience, and pass a written examination. The Private Detective Agency License requires an individual to obtain a Private Investigator License, have at least four years of investigative experience, submit a business plan, and pass a written examination. Both licenses must be renewed every two years, by completing six hours of continuing education and paying a fee. Private detectives in Pennsylvania must also comply with all state and federal laws and regulations.
