A Rhode Island Statement of Abandonment of Use of Fictitious Business Name is a legal document filed with the Rhode Island Secretary of State in order to officially terminate the use of a fictitious business name (also known as an assumed business name, trade name, and/or DBA). It is important to note that this document does not terminate the business itself, only the fictitious name associated with it. In order to do so, the business must file a separate document. There are two types of Rhode Island Statement of Abandonment of Use of Fictitious Business Name: a domestic filing and a foreign filing. A domestic filing is used when the business is located within Rhode Island, while a foreign filing is used when the business is located outside of Rhode Island. Both types of filings require the business to provide specific information, including the fictitious business name, the state in which the business is incorporated or qualified, the date of filing, and the name and signature of the business owner. Once the document is filed, the fictitious business name is no longer valid and cannot be used for any purpose. The filing of the statement is considered an official declaration that the business no longer intends to use the fictitious business name.
